How is Roulette Game Played?

Roulette game consists of a key component – the roulette wheel with numbered slots from 1 to 36, plus either one zero (0) in European/French roulette or a zero and a double zero (00) in American roulette. With a ball spinning on the outer edge of the wheel, the game decides the winners when the ball lands on any of the numbered pockets. The roulette table lists various betting options on the outcome number, with the winners decided on the bets placed and ball landing pocket.

Step by Step Gameplay

  • Place Bets
  • Before the spin of the roulette wheel, players must place their bets. There is a range of bet types available, all explained in below section.

  • Spin the Wheel
  • In online casinos, player has to click on the Spin button to initiate the wheel spin. The RNG system is activated at this time. The ball is also launched in the opposite direction of the wheel spin.

  • Ball Lands on a Number
  • At one point, the ball will land and settle in a pocket on the roulette wheel. This will set the winning number.

  • Payouts
  • Players that have placed bets on the winning number or a bet type option which includes the winning number will receive a payout based on the payout odds.

  • Collect Winnings or Place New Bets
  • After payouts were made, players can collect the winnings starting placing new bets.

Roulette Bet Types

There are two main bet categories in roulette games, each with different payout odds ranges:

Inside Bets

These bets are placed inside the numbered grid on the roulette table, covering individual numbers or small group of numbers. These bets tend to have higher payouts, but they do come with lower winning odds.

  • Straight-Up Bet: this is bet placed on a single number. Pays 35:1.
  • Split Bet: this is a bet on two adjacent numbers, placed on the line between them. Pays 17:1.
  • Street Bet: this is a bet covering a row of three consecutive numbers. Pays 11:1.
  • Corner (Square) Bet: this is a bet covering four numbers that meet at one corner, with the chip placed on that corner. Pays 8:1.
  • Line (Six Line) Bet: this is a bet covering six numbers in two adjacent rows. Pays 5:1.
  • Trio/Basket Bet: this is a special bet involving zero(s) and one or two other numbers, ex. 0-1-2, with varying payouts (typically for special wheel layouts).
Bet Type Numbers Covered Payout Risk Level
Straight-Up 1 number 35:1 High (low odds)
Split 2 adjacent numbers 17:1 High
Street 3 consecutive numbers 11:1 High
Corner 4 numbers 8:1 Medium-High
Line (Six Line) 6 numbers 5:1 Medium

Outside Bets

The outside bets are placed on the outside of the numbered grid on the roulette table, covering large group of numbers which makes it easier to land a winning bet, but the payout is exponentially smaller.

  • Red or Black: this is a bet on all red or all black numbers. Pays 1:1.
  • Odd or Even: this is a bet on either odd or even numbers. Pays 1:1.
  • High or Low: this is a bet on numbers 1–18 (low) or 19–36 (high). Pays 1:1.
  • Dozens: this is a bet on one of the three groups of 12 numbers (1–12, 13–24, or 25–36). Pays 2:1.
  • Columns: this is a bet on one of the three vertical columns of 12 numbers. Pays 2:1.
Bet Type Numbers Covered Payout Risk Level
Red/Black 18 numbers 1:1 Low (better odds)
Odd/Even 18 numbers 1:1 Low
High/Low 18 numbers 1:1 Low
Dozen 12 numbers 2:1 Medium
Column 12 numbers 2:1 Medium

There would be a third category of roulette bets, less known or used by players:

Special or Announced Bets

The special bets are common on French roulette game, which are bets placed on segments of numbers on the wheel rather than on the table grid.

  • Tiers du Cylindre: this is a bet that covers 12 numbers on one side of the wheel.
  • Voisins du Zero: this is a bet that covers numbers around zero.
  • Orphelins: this is a bet that covers the numbers not included in the above two bets.
  • Jeu 0: this is a bet that covers the numbers closest to zero.

Roulette Game Strategies

When it comes to the roulette game, there are several well known betting strategies that players use in an attempt to maximize their gameplay and winning chances. See below the most widely used roulette strategies:

Martingale Strategy involves doubling the bet placed after each loss. Eventually, when the player wins, previous losses will be recovered along with a profit equal to the original bet. While the simplest of the strategies, the main risks are the requirements of a large bankroll along with the risk of quickly hitting the table bet limits, leading to big losses.

D’Alembert Strategy involves increasing the bet by one unit after each loss, and decreasing the bet with one unit after each win. This strategy aims at balancing the wins and losses in a more gradual way compared to Martingale. This strategy is easily applicable to even-money bets like red/black or odd/even.

Fibonacci Strategy uses the Fibonacci number sequence to determine bet size. Based on this strategy, a player needs to move one step forward in the sequence after a loss, and two steps back after a win. This strategy recovers losses with fewer, less drastic bet increases.

Paroli Strategy or also known as Reverse Martingale requires players to double the bet after each win, but reset to the base bet after three consecutive wins or a loss. This strategy is focused on capitalizing on winning streaks, without increasing risk after losses.

James Bond Strategy is an option which requires a mix of bets covering high numbers (19-36 – 70% bet stake), a range of mid-level numbers (13-18 – 25% bet stake) and zero (5% bet stake).

Andrucci Strategy is based on the assumption that some numbers appear more frequently than others. Frequent numbers can tracked over lets say 30 roulette spins to pick hot numbers, but users should know this is hardly a strategy, but rather a speculative approach to roulette play which comes with high risks and no evidence or effectiveness.

Roulette FAQ

What is the House Edge in roulette?
The House Edge in roulette depends on the roulette wheel used for the game.

  • American roulette has a house edge of 5.26%, with the wheel having 38 pockets, covering numbers from 1 to 36, plus 0 and 00 (double zero). The double zero increases the house advantage compared to other roulette games.
  • European/French roulette has a house edge of 2.54%, with the wheel having 37 pockets, covering numbers from 1 to 36, plus 0.

Therefore, European roulette offers better chances of winnings, with the payout odds closer to the risks assumed.

Is there a Roulette Game Infographic Showcasing all Bet Types?
BONUS.wiki has developed an infographic which lists bet types available on roulette games and explains the payouts versus the risks taken. Check it below:

What should I play: American Roulette or European Roulette?
The answer to this question should be as clear as possible: European roulette offers better house edge compared to American roulette. While when you are in a brick-and-mortar casino you may not get the choice of what roulette game to play, in online casinos you have both options. Based on the infographic published above, European roulette has 2.54% house edge American roulette has 5.26%. The difference comes with no better payouts unfortunately, so the answer to the question is logical: European roulette offers same payouts at much better winning odds.

History of Roulette Game

Roulette game history starts around 18th century, with Paris based casinos introducing a wheel game with numbered pockets for numbers 1 to 36 plus zero(s). In the mid-19th century, French brothers Francois and Louis Blanc created the single-zero wheel to offer better odds to players. This reduced the house edge compared to the earlier versions used. The single-zero version became a standard in Europe, especially in Monte Carlo casinos. The American double-zero wheel emerged later, when roulette reached the United States. The double zero increased the house edge.

From a table game to a digital evolution with the game accessible on smartphones or PCs, roulette has pushed the boundaries of time and longevity, becoming one of the most emblematic casino games. Now, these roulette game versions can be played and tested for free by accessing for example the ones published above on this page, offering free play, with no download and no registration required.
